It is 856 miles from St Georges Harbor, Bermuda to the Virgin Islands. We set off on Friday, November 15th. We had waited out the passage of a low front and hoped to catch favorable winds from the east as we proceeded south to the Caribbean. The seas started out 3 to 4 feet and progressively became larger. They topped off at 10 to 12 feet on our third and fourth day out. The wind stayed south southeast for for four and a half days and then gradually turned east. We were close hauled and beating as hard as we could. Even though catamaran sailing is surely as comfortable as you can get, we found ourselves tired and uncomfortable after five days. Then amazingly as we passed through a minor squall we found ourselves on the other side with a very light east wind and calm seas. Hooray!!!, for a day of motor sailing and napping to make up for the previous conditions. Just about midnight on November 20 we saw the lights from Annagada. A few hours later we were anchored in the lee of Sandy Cay. This was our first extended voyage with just the two of us on board.

This was our first long passage with just the two of us. Once, we got into our routine of naps and watches we fared quite well. The new cockpit enclosure made it possible to be topside and comfortable. The sun was hot and the waves consistently came up over the bow but the resulting spray stayed safely off of us while we lolled in the shade. About three AM on November 21 we dropped the hook on the lee side of Sandy Cay near Yost Van Dyke. This is what we woke to find.
Had we arrived in paradise? |
