Potomac River

Here is our route up and down the mighty Potomac.

We took two days to travel northwest along the Potomac. Its a long mighty river flowing through lush countryside and some industrial areas. It is wide and it has a strong current. We anchored in the river across from a large electric generating plant on the first night. The following morning we stopped to see Mt Vernon. It has  a dock primarily used by tour boats but they welcomed the Shearwater. Later in the day we traveled a few more miles up the river to Alexandria where we anchored to wait for our scheduled midnight opening of the  Wilson bridge which carries I95 traffic across the Potomac. By 12:10 we were through the bridge on our way to our nation's capitol. It was spectacular to approach in the dark. The city with its array of monuments and important buildings was aglow. We tried to take pictures of the site but it was impossible to capture the effect.
